This month our highlight, Dec. 24th 1745. Benjamin Rush, born in Byberry Township, Pennsylvania. Signer of the Declaration of Independence and the young nation's foremost physician of his time. Dr. Rush, in 1784, wrote the most influential pamphlet on the subject of drinking,"An Inquiry into the Effects of Ardent Spirits upon the Human Body and Mind." Dr. Rush was the first one to suggest alcoholism as a disease, which produces an "appetite" or "craving" in the afflicted person. "Once addicted even a saint would have a hard time controlling themselves," he wrote. His description of chronic drunkenness was as a progressive condition.

1873 -December
The Women's Christian Temperance Union (W.C.T.U) is founded in Fedonia, New York.
  1902 - December
Book: "Varieties of Religious Experience," by William James is published. One of eleven books (including the Bible) that influenced how the big book would be written. Bill W. said "William James, though long dead in his grave, was founder of A.A."
 
1917 - 1919 December
Rev. Sam Shoemaker worked for the Y.M.C.A. as a secretary in Peking, China. As a spokesman for the "Oxford Group" he was to become very important in the birth and Growth of A.A. Example: Bill W. in our approved A.A. literature gives Rev. Sam credit for ten of our twelve Steps! Something to ask your sponsor, where do we find that information?
 
1918 - December
Nell Wing born near Rochester, N.Y. Nell first met Bill W. in 2947 and for over 20 years she worked as his aide and executive secretary until Bill's death (1971). From 1955, she also was the A.A. librarian and from 1972 to 1982 she was our first archivist at our General Service Office.
 
1933 - December
Last day of Prohibition in the U.S. Made little difference to either Dr. bob or Bill who had been drinking beyond their control for years.
 
1934 - December 11th
Bill .W's sobriety date at Towns Hospital while he was under the care of Dr. Silkworth.
  1940 - December 1st
The Chicago Daily Tribune begins a series of articles on A.A. by reporter N. Hamilton.
 
1941 - December
Membership in A.A. grows from 1,500 in one year to 6,000 members due largely to the Saturday Evening Post article written by Jack Alexander.
 
1944 - December
The 7th issue of the Grapevine carried Lois Wilson's story (Bill's wife) telling how she came to live by A.A. principles herself, not just for Bill. the same issue carried letters from children of A.A. members relating how A.A. had changed their lives. Before the formation of Al-Anon and Alateen the Grapevine regularly printed stories by spouses and children.
  1948 - December
Dr. Bob's last major talk takes place in Detroit.
  1949 - December 7th Sister Ignatia accepts the Poverello Medal of St. Francis on behalf of A.A. from the College of Steubenville, Ohio.
  1979 -December 6th The person who brought our tow co-founders together for their flirt meeting, Henrietta Seiberling passes away. Burial was at her birthplace, Lawerance, Kentucky.
